It’s been a slow week in the world of consumerism. Apparently, even the marketing teams are taking a break, or perhaps they’ve finally run out of adjectives to describe “innovative” black plastic rectangles. Either way, we have exactly one item to discuss, so let’s get this over with.

Keychron Explains How Magnets Work

Keychron has published a riveting guide on how to use “HE Mode” on their launcher web app. For the uninitiated, “HE” stands for Hall Effect, which is the fancy way of saying “magnetic switches.”

The guide walks you through setting up actuation distances and “Rapid Trigger” features. Rapid Trigger allows the key to reset the instant you let go, which is theoretically useful for rhythm games and shooters. In practice, it mostly just gives you one less excuse for why your K/D ratio is embarrassing.

They also explain that you can confuse yourself with “Advanced Mode” if the basic settings aren’t granular enough for your obsessive tweaking. If you own a Keychron Q HE board and enjoy fiddling with graphs instead of typing, this is for you.

Weekly News Digest: Pink Popstars and Visual Anthropreneurs

It’s been a week of high culture and low effort in the peripheral world. While Razer tries to court K-Pop stans with pink plastic, Logitech is paying people to paint “connections” in San Francisco. Meanwhile, Keychron has apparently just discovered the concept of a user manual. Let’s look at the garbage.

Razer x BLACKPINK: Play in Pink

Razer has announced a collaboration with K-Pop juggernaut BLACKPINK. The press release is a masterpiece of corporate nonsense, promising “exclusive limited-edition co-branded gear that merges cutting-edge performance with bold, pink-forward aesthetics.”

Translation: They painted existing mice pink, slapped a logo on them, and will charge you a 40% “Blink” tax. They claim this gives gamers “new ways to express themselves,” because nothing says individuality like buying the same mass-produced peripheral as 50 million other fans.

Logitech’s “Visual Anthropreneur”

In San Francisco, Logitech sponsored a “Winter Walk” where they hired a “street muralist and visual anthropreneur” (a title I am mostly sure they invented to justify the invoice) to paint a mural outside their Experience Store. The art features a “red thread” connecting people.

It’s heartwarming stuff. Unfortunately, that “red thread” is actually a USB cable, and it connects you directly to Logitech’s Q4 revenue targets. They try to spin the MX Master 4 into the narrative, claiming the haptics make the artist feel “in the work.” I’m sure the mouse is great, but let’s not pretend scrolling through Excel is a spiritual journey.

Keychron Discovers Documentation

Keychron spent the week flooding their blog with groundbreaking tutorials like “How to Remap a Key” and “How to Set Backlight.” It’s adorable. After years of selling keyboards that required a PhD in QMK to configure, they have finally realized that maybe—just maybe—explaining how their “Launcher” software works is a good idea.

They still haven’t fixed the software itself, which remains a web-based beta mess, but at least now there is a blog post explaining exactly how broken it is. Baby steps.

December is here, and with it comes the inevitable flood of “look what we did this year” content. This week: a study about why young people prefer gaming to drinking, and Logitech’s recap of their own store opening.

Gen Z Men Prefer Gaming to Pubs, Says Gaming Company

In a study that absolutely nobody commissioned to sell headsets, Logitech G has discovered that 61% of Gen Z Australian men prefer connecting with friends through online gaming rather than going to pubs. Shocking news from a gaming peripheral manufacturer.

The study surveyed 1,500 Australians aged 18-45 and found that gamers have 3.8 more hours of social time per week than non-gamers. Key reasons cited: affordability (pubs are expensive), relaxation (no Uber coordination required), and convenience (no pants required, presumably).

Logitech helpfully notes this study was conducted following the launch of their A20 X Gaming Headset. What a coincidence! Still, the underlying point is probably valid—gaming has become a legitimate social space, even if the messenger has an obvious agenda.

Logitech’s Store Opened and People Came

The Logitech Experience Store officially launched in San Francisco on December 4, and Logitech wrote 500 words about how great their own event was. Photographer Anthony Ghnassia premiered his book and showed off the MX Master 4. Artist Mike V demonstrated “psychedelic, hyperdimensional art” using a computer mouse.

There was a “Mega Mouse” for photo ops, free laser engraving for MX Master 4 purchases, and a ribbon cutting ceremony. This was apparently Logitech’s first U.S. store in 44 years, which is either impressive restraint or a sign that retail pop-ups are a new experiment.

Happy Thanksgiving week, or as the tech industry calls it, “Black Friday Warm-Up.” This week’s single piece of news is about iPad cases, because nothing says holiday spirit like accessory shopping.

Logitech Wants You to Pack an iPad

Logitech published a “Best iPad Case for Holiday Travel” guide, which is definitely helpful content and not at all a thinly disguised product catalog. They recommend three of their own products for your journey home.

The Flip Folio ($160-$180) features a magnetic detachable keyboard and adjustable kickstand—good for typing emails at the airport. The Combo Touch ($160-$260) adds a trackpad for “laptop-like” functionality, which Apple claims iPad already has anyway. And the Keys-To-Go 2 ($80) is just a portable Bluetooth keyboard if you don’t want the case commitment.

Honestly? These are all decent products if you actually use your iPad for productivity while traveling. But if you’re like most people, you’re just going to hold it in your lap and watch Netflix, no keyboard required.
